Northern Province Fisher People's Unity General Body Meeting


Northern Province Fisher People's Unity conducted its General Body Meeting on the 12th September at the Yalpadi Restaurant in Jaffna.


The following matters were discussed at the meeting.

1. Minutes of the previous meeting

2. Current situation on fisheries issues in the districts in the Northern Province

3. Current political situation in Sri Lanka

4. Activities that could not be done in the past

- Actions of the Fisheries Co- Management platform

- Trawler fishing and Court case

- Actions on migration and Illegal fishing

5. Expected future actions

- Meeting with Minister of fisheries on migratory fishing, Social security, Destructive fishing and development issues

- Awareness program on illegal fishing and signature campaign against the illegal fishing.

- Field visit of representatives of NPFPU (public meeting with fisher communities)

Several decisions were made at the end of the meeting

1. Dialogue with Minister of Fisheries end of September

2. Representatives of the NPFPU and NAFSO will organize public meeting in district level with fisher communities in Mannar, Mullaithevu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna.

3. District leaders collect informations on Migration and illegal fishing and update the research report.

During the Meeting Mr. Herman Kumara, National Convener of NAFSO addressed the audience on current political and Economic situation in Sir Lanka. Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, Project Coordinator provided inputs on future actions of NPFPU. Mrs. Lavina Hasanthi, Gender program Coordinator of NAFSO, Ms. T. Datsha, Province Coordinator of Fisheries sector and Districts Coordinators and staff from Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaithevu and Jaffna districts attached to NAFSO gave technical support. Mr. N. V. Subramaniyam, Chairperson of the NPFPU conducted the meeting, Mr. A. Sankar, Secretary, Mr. Franzis Joseph, Vice chairperson, Mr. T. Anthony, Tresseror, Mr. N. M. Alam, Mr. A. Annarasa, Bord members and Mrs. Anne Reeta Vice Secretary of the NPFPU gave inputs to tack to good discussion. 41 Representatives participated.

Support for home garden


Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity Movement provided the seeds for 8 women in Milady, Jaffna. Providing seeds, staff of the organization has educated the women about the importance of developing organic home garden. Mr. Imbanayagam, District Coordinator and staff of the organization participated in the event. 

Support to people


Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity provided dry- ration for the affected people due to the pandemic. 32 dry-ration packs have been provided to the people in Yogapuram in 9th of June 2020. This is a part of the whole process of providing dry-ration. Mr. Inpanayakam, District Coordinator and other animators participated in the meeting. 

Addakiri IDP camp


According to Mr. Inpanayagam, District Coordinator of Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity, they have found a new Internally Displaced Camp (IDP) in Addakiri area. While they were traveling with an official purpose, the staff has received information about an IDP camp that they did not let to know before. The staff has just visited the place. The camp has been located in Navali village in Jaffna. There are 15 families in the camp. The camp has been built in a privet land. The displaced people have no any right to the land. The situation has been reported to the divisional secretary . The representatives of Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity have discussed with the people in the camp. Land right is the main concern of the discussion. The people in the camp are ready to purchase the land from the land owner whose land has been used to the camp. The landless people wish to consider any condition in relation to the land. The staff has discussed with them widely. The camp people have agreed to organize a protect with the support of partner organization in  future. This information was shared by Mr. Inpanayagam. 

Visiting women committee in Yogapurama


Mr. Inpanayagam, District Coordinator, Miss. Jeyachiththra, Animator of Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity visited the women committee in Yogapuram on 14 of June 2020. It has discussed the administrative matters of the committee and activities that the committee implements in the area. As well as, it has concerned the new tendencies to develop the community after the pandemic situation. The staff of the Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity visits the women committee regularly.

A meeting of women from Nedavan Camp


A meeting was held on July 9, 2020 for the women of the Nidawan Camp in Jaffna District. Fourteen women from the camp participated this meeting. Mr. Imbanayagam, District Coordinator, Jaffna and Ms. Chithra and Ms. Thadza were also present at the meeting.

Dry-ration for Selwapuram


Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity provided 32 dry-ration packs for the affected people in Selwapuram in Jaffna on 20 of June 2020. Jaffna District Fisheries Solidarity organizes a series of events to provide dry-ration, seeds, and school equipments for the affected communities due to the Corona in Jaffna. This is a part of the process. Mr. Impanayagam, District Coordinator initiated in organizing the event.
